HALIFAX – A moratorium on oil and gas drilling on Georges Bank will be extended until the end of 2022 under legislation tabled by the Nova Scotia government.
Energy Minister Michel Samson says the proposed bill mirrors legislation passed by the federal government in June.
Samson says the moratorium is about protecting an area that is important to the province’s fishery and overall economy.
The moratorium has been in place since 1988.
Located off southwestern Nova Scotia, Georges Bank is home to some of the most productive and ecologically sensitive fishing grounds on the East Coast.
