US presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders announced on Wednesday his support for a new bill that aims ban all new fossil fuel development on United States federal lands. This would occur while cancelling the current leases which aren’t producing, as reported by Mother Jones.
Titled “Keep It In The Ground Act,” the bill would also prevent offshore oil and gas drilling in both the Arctic and Atlantic, and halting the issue of new leases for offshore drilling in the Pacific and the Gulf of Mexico.
“I believe all of us have a moral responsibility. That’s just the simple truth,” Sanders said. Adding, “the planet that we’re going to be leaving for our kids is something we should be ashamed of.”
Sanders made the announcement alongside Oregon Democratic Senator Jeff Merkley. A statement released by Merkley’s office stated the new legislation was made to leave “over 90 percent of the potential carbon emissions from oil, gas and coal on our federal lands and federal waters underground forever.”
