ZAMA CITY, Alta. – The Alberta government says it’s too soon to say whether a Texas-based oil company will face charges over a pipeline that leaked 9.5 million litres of industrial waste water.

The Apache Canada Ltd. spill has flowed into wetlands in a remote area near Zama City in the province’s northwest.

The Energy Resources Conservation Board says the spill was first reported on June 1, but the board didn’t learn about its size until Tuesday.

Alberta Environment says its crews are checking how the spill has affected wildlife and vegetation and the company is removing the water which contains salt, oil and minerals.

Spokeswoman Nikki Booth says a decision on charges won’t be made until the department and the board complete their investigations.

The New Democrats are calling on the government to release a report completed last year on pipeline safety in Alberta.
