SAN ANTONIO, TX–(Marketwired – Feb 5, 2015) – The hydraulic fracturing boom has significantly changed the energy industry. To understand risk factors and latent exposures in the rapid expansion of oil and gas extraction operations requires a dynamic and robust HSE program. In light of growth, the industry is focused on addressing challenges by prioritizing performance improvements while monitoring all exposures that could impact the workforce, environment and surrounding communities.

Mr. Hansen, Vice President, Health, Safety & Environment at FTS International recently spoke with marcus evans about key topics to be discussed at next month’s 3rd Annual HSE for Unconventional Oil & Gas Conference, March 10-12, 2015 at the Grand Hyatt in San Antonio, TX.

What are the most important elements of PSM to incorporate into health and safety operations? What are some of the benefits of this integration?

MH: Management of Change and Mechanical Integrity. Some of the benefits of addressing management of change are ensuring that equipment is compatible with the processes with which it is being used when replaced “in-kind” and guaranteeing that safety systems continue to function properly after the change. Mechanical integrity is important particularly in process industries to replace items “before” they fail to mitigate hazards.

Based on your experience, what suggestions do you have for employing MOC resourcefully?

MH: To implement MOC resourcefully really means to me is to be thoughtful. Involving the target audience in the development is a key to the success of the implementation. Similarly, keeping the system simple ensures that it can be done by all involved in addition to getting executed in the first place. If it is difficult to do, none of it will be completed.

In order to influence HSE initiatives effectively, what do you feel are the most important aspects of HSE to present to the CEO of an organization?

MH: The most important aspects of HSE to present to the CEO are:

  • Take ownership of safety
  • Keep the CEO informed
  • Keep information relevant
  • Know the culture
  • Know how to change the culture
  • Providing relevant metrics and KPIs

What key takeaway do you hope attendees will leave with after hearing your case study on strengthening corporate influence?

MH: The knowledge to influence the CEO and senior management towards improved safety cultures and ownership and accountability of safety.
