Sometimes it almost seems like we’re living in a bubble devoid of common sense, logic or the facts. In light of this, the prudent thing to do is to all take responsibility and spend  five minutes, twice a week, sharing and promoting an informed conversation. This is so that the special interest groups that only attack Canadian pipelines and Canadian energy exports don’t sway the conversation to suit their fear based agenda.
Here are ten facts about the oil & gas industry in Alberta that will contribute to a more informed citizenry when it comes to one of the most important economic resource of our province.
  1. Albertans own the oil sands, we lease the right of development to companies. These companies can in many cases go anywhere in the world, if they go outside Alberta they don’t create jobs in Albert
  2. These companies invest billions of dollars and create jobs, taxes and royalties that fund Alberta and contribute to the rest of the country. In many cases without this investment the resource would never be developed and those jobs wouldn’t be created.
  3. We all use oil and world oil demand is increasing every single day, we should be creating jobs and growing our global market share with our valuable and in-demand resource.
  4. A barrel of oil produced in Alberta is among the best possible barrels produced anywhere around the world for social responsibility, environmental protection, transparency, monitoring and democratic principles of government. This also includes the principles of equality, freedom of speech, freedom of the press and the involvement of everyone in society and the economy.
  5. It is simply not logical for special interest groups to claim they care about the environment or human rights and that’s why they would rather buy oil from countries with weaker regulations and protections then Alberta.
  6. Giving our market share to these other countries does zero for our families and our communities – Will any of these other countries reinvest their profits in our social programs or create jobs in Canada?
  7. Alberta is a world leader and innovator. One example of this is Cosia, one of the greatest examples of collaboration in technology and intellectual property between competing companies that can be found anywhere on earth.
  8. Alberta has been leading the way and will continue to do so. We are the only top supplier of oil to the USA with climate regulations and a carbon tax on oil production. We are also the only top 10 oil reserve country with these same regulations.
  9. We have to know where we are to figure out where were going. Canada is the most regulated, monitored transparent, socially progressive and democratic of the world’s top 10 oil reserve country these 10 countries hold almost 90% of global oil reserves.
