CALGARY, Nov. 2, 2015 /CNW/ – OSP worked with Pioneer Energy Services (NYSE:PES) to successfully apply their 2K7® biocide to mitigate bacterial growth in coiled tubing fluids in the Eagle Ford formation.
“Microbial influenced corrosion, or MIC, has been shown to cause premature failure of coiled tubing units in the Eagle Ford, and other unconventional formations, resulting in downtime, added costs and safety concerns,” said Stan Leong, President and CEO of OSP. MIC is caused by the formation of biofilms resulting in localized corrosion in the form of very small pits, which lead to cracks and eventual pipe failure.
OSP worked closely with Pioneer Energy Services, the coiled tubing provider, to determine the levels of bacteria using the OSP LifeCheck™ ATP test kit. “This technology provides users with real-time, accurate measurements of total microbial content in as little as 5 minutes,” said Jeremy Luth, OSP Business Development Director in Houston. “This enabled us to determine the best treatment program using OSP's 2K7 biocide, which is particularly suited for oil and gas industry applications because it doesn't react with other fluid additives,” Luth said.
“Application of the OSP LifeCheck test kits and 2K7 biocide for MIC spans the full cycle of drilling, completion, fracturing and production,” said Leong. “Wherever you have water, you will have bacterial growth,” he said, “the trick is knowing when and where you need to treat and when you don't – that's where OSP's expertise comes into play.”
