Jane Fonda today used vivid words to describe her experience of viewing the oilsands while doing a flyover in a helicopter.

“It’s like someone took my skin and peeled it off my body over a very large surface,” Ms. Fonda said after lunching with members of the Fort McMurray First Nation. “It made my body ache to watch it.”

And just as she uttered those words, she was confronted by a lady, presumably a local from Fort McMurray, questioning Ms. Fonda’s motives and understanding of what Fort McMurray has been through.

The outspoken local asked Ms. Fonda,”Did you fly over the reclamation area?”

Soon thereafter, the two walked toward each othe and at one point the actress reached out and gently grasped the woman’s hand.

“Listen, I’m not against you,” said Ms. Fonda.

“Well, I sure hope that your report on Fort McMurray is a pleasant one, and not just bashing us. We are hurting here,” the woman replied.

She reminded the celebrity that 2,500 people lost their homes in the May fires, which forced roughly 90,000 residents to leave the city

“Did you sleep in a hotel?” The woman wondered.

“Yes, I did,” Fonda said. “And I flew in an airplane here. And I understand what you’re saying.”
