OSY Rentals: Canadian Oilpatch’s Version of Redneck Sophistication

The folks at OSY Rentals, headquartered in Major, Saskatchewan, areproud to star in a comedy YouTube series,
affectionately called Oh Sh!t Yeah – think Duck Dynasty meets Ice Road with a dash of Gold Rush – and are pleased to announce the launch of season two this September. They promise it will be funnier, more disrespectful, with added touches of sacrilege. Yet beneath the redneck veneer of irreverence and profanity, lurks a crew of 12 dedicated technicians who are deadly serious about their oilfield rentals business.

Dallas Cairns, OSY Rentals’ co-owner, says the company’s flagship rental package is its vapour tight tank equipment. “We supply all the components producers need to operate a fully-functional single well battery, downstream of the wellhead,” he says. “We pride ourselves that we can spot the tank, stand the flare stack, run the flow and flare lines, and have it all operational within three to five hours.”

Launched in the fall of 2011 with only seven tanks, today OSY Rentals has 53 tank packages operating from Estevan, SK to Fort St. John, BC. “Some producers’ rent for three months until they get the well flow lined, while others keep our units on-site for years and years,” Cairns reports. “Some companies maybe don’t want to tie up their capital — about $200,000 — to purchase a unit, so they just rent. Many organizations opt to use their cash to drill another well and prefer to pay the monthly fee instead. We had to get creative in the tough times, our crew will drive 10 hours to deliver a unit to a wellsite and then set-up free of charge.” He laughs. “Don’t want to do that forever but we do what we have to.”

OSY offers the highest-quality equipment, fitted to safely handle hydrogen sulphide, and includes tanks (with capacities of 480 to 600 barrels at a 14.7 psi operating pressure), flare system (with flame arrestor and a retractable pilot system), metering and controls (with an inlet ESD, meter run and dryflo, catalytic heater), piping (flow line and flare line), and fire tube (with 24v burner management system).

Tim Dell — co-owner/founder based in Red Deer, AB – heads up OSY’s Rival hydrovac division. He figured out how to take the previously gigantic trucks (which often violated the constraints placed on trucking by the Department of Transportation) and shrunk them enough to stay within the law. The Rival trucks are 30-feet long and just over 11-feet in height (smaller than the 35 to 40 feet length and 13-feet in heights of the large trucks). “Our trucks are cost effective, efficient, and lightweight,” Cairns states.

OSY Rental’s long-term strategy, says Cairns, “is to grow, grow, grow. The company survived the recent oil crash and believes things will pick-up this fall with a new operating normal. We’re still having fun and as long as we’re all having a good time, we aim to prudently get bigger — as producers need our equipment.”
