Are you an excellent communicator? Do you enjoy working with people? Do you have an interest in negotiations? If so, a career as a Land Agent may be an excellent option for you.

As a Land Agent you will work with industry, government, regulators, landowners and stakeholders to arrive at mutually beneficial solutions to the acquisition of land for well sites, pipeline routes, highways and utility right of ways and alternate energy sites.

You can play a vital role in facilitating access to the surface of lands while acting as a liaison between corporate or government agencies and the landowner.

Olds College is the leading educational institution in the training of surface land agents in Western Canada. Our two (2) year diploma program offers students the opportunity to learn all aspects of this diverse career and qualifies graduates to write their Interim Land Agent Licensing exam. With our hands-on training in classrooms, labs and field settings, you will learn how to play a pivotal role in the acquisition of land.

The Land Agent diploma program at Olds College teaches:

  • Consultation & Negotiation
  • Agricultural practices
  • Surface Rights & Land Acquisition
  • Petroleum fundamentals
  • Specialized land and energy industry terminology
  • Regulatory requirements

Throughout your time in the program, you will have the opportunity to work with an industry Mentor, who will help you build your network and deepen your understanding of the industry.  It will also give you first hand exposure to the workings of a surface land department or land consulting company, and the opportunity to meet with other land personnel in order to observe and understand the overall perspective of the land profession.

During your second year as a student, you will participate in a practicum assignment to further develop your skills.

“I found Olds College to be the perfect school. The instructors I had during the course of my two years were more that I could have ever hoped for. They were extremely knowledgeable, patient, helpful, and supportive. My experience with each and everyone of them was positive. I can comfortably say that I would recommend the College to anyone. I am extremely thankful to everyone for making my time there one of the best experiences of my life.”

Calvin Hagel, Class of 2012

The Olds College Land Agent program is strongly supported by Canadian Association of Petroleum Landmen, International Right-of-Way Association, and the Alberta Association of Surface Land Agents. Olds College students are encouraged to join these associations (at a reduced fee) to interact with industry and build their professional network and secure employment after graduation.

In order to be admitted to the Land Agent diploma program at Olds College, applicants must meet the following requirements (or equivalents):

  • 50% or better in English Language Arts 30-1 or 30-2
  • 50% or better in Math 20-1 or 20-2
  • 50% or better in Science 20 OR Chemistry 20 OR Biology 20
  • Meet the English Language Proficiency Requirement
  • Complete a Career Investigation

There is still space in the Land Agent diploma program for the Fall 2018 intake, so if this is a career path that is of interest to you, now would be a great time to apply.

The Oil and Gas industry has now stabilized and is currently recovering from the most recent downturn.  As company activities are ramping up, along with the enhanced public and aboriginal consultation requirements, we’re expecting significant demand for Land professionals in the near future”.
