Clearwater heavy oil producer achieves significant savings with newly developed emulsion breaker

January 14, 20257:02 AM BOE Report Staff

SECURE substantially enhanced heavy oil producer, Baytex Energy’s operation in northern Alberta by developing new oil dehydrating technology. Producing up to 2,300 m³ of oil daily from 15 wells, the operations faced high water content in its oil, requiring extensive and costly transportation to meet pipeline specifications. With two trucks running 24/7 and retention times too short to fully dehydrate the oil on-site, operational expenses were increasing.

SECURE introduced its innovative Heavy Oil Emulsion Breaker EB 2003, designed to efficiently dehydrate oil directly at the production pad. This breakthrough solution, operating at a treatment rate of 300 ppm (0.3L / m3), transformed operations. Over a five-week trial, EB 2003 delivered pipeline-ready oil while cutting costs.

“Implementing SECURE’s Emulsion Breaker EB 2003 provided us with a solution that not only allowed us to meet pipeline specifications efficiently but also brought significant savings. Reducing our trucking costs and achieving chemical savings underscores the effectiveness of this innovative approach,” says John Hickley, Area Superintendent of Calgary-based, Baytex Energy.

“We are pleased with the collaboration and the significant impact it has had on our cost management and operational sustainability,” continues Hickley. “Our partnership with SECURE highlights the power of tailored solutions in overcoming industry challenges.”

With significant dollars saved annually, improved efficiency and enhanced sustainability, SECURE’s EB 2003 sets a new benchmark for custom chemical solutions. Click here to read the case study.
