Pierre Poilievre is bringing the election discussion back towards the economy in a recent post on X, showing how badly Canada has lagged most of the world in economic growth per capita over the last decade under Liberal leadership. The “Lost Liberal Decade” he calls it as a decade’s worth of antagonist policies towards businesses have come home to roost.
This chart shows the Lost Liberal Decade which gave Canada the worst growth among its competitors.
Now Liberals expect to be rewarded with a fourth term in power.

It’s reminiscent of the famous quote “it’s the economy, stupid” credited to one of Bill Clinton’s former strategists in the lead up to the 1992 US election. And in fact, this year there was a massive spike in Google searches for the famous old saying right around the 2024 US election.
It can be felt here in Canada too. Canadian markets have underperformed, the Canadian dollar has underperformed, Canadian economic growth has underperformed. The people are getting frustrated. There is so much potential in this country just waiting to be unlocked.
Interestingly another one of the election slogans from that year is also very relevant as Canadians get ready for the polls this year: “change vs. more of the same.”
Canada needs change.
