Since 2019, Interra Energy Services has successfully deployed its Raptor OC™ (Open/Close) coiled tubing-actuated frac sleeve system in both Canada and the U.S., primarily targeting the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin in the W3, W4, and W5 areas. With over 1,200 wellbore deployments, the system has surpassed the milestone with its 50,000th stage, recently being installed on a Teine Energy project.
The Raptor OC™ system is designed for use in both open hole and cemented wellbores. Coiled tubing is deployed to actuate frac sleeves, enabling precise control of individual zone openings and closures. The system operates with Interra’s Velocity™ packer BHA. By providing reliable zonal isolation and enhanced fracture stimulation, the Raptor OC system helps optimize production and improves operational efficiency, making it a vital tool for boosting well performance in any targeted producing zone.
Over the past six years, wellbore completion strategies have evolved, with operators focusing on tighter stage spacing and longer laterals, resulting in a significant increase in wellbore stage counts. Throughout these changes, the Raptor OC system has consistently met the demands of the more complex completions, ensuring that lost-in-hole events were virtually eliminated. Over 50,000 sleeves have been installed to date, with only five BHAs disconnected in the wellbore, demonstrating exceptional performance.
One of the common challenges experienced by coiled tubing-actuated sleeve systems can be casing deformation. The Raptor OC system addresses these concerns in a number of different ways. The Velocity Packer BHA is set 4-5 meters below the Raptor sleeve, drastically reducing the frequency of casing deformation. Interra Energy offers a slim OD shifting BHA that has successfully navigated through casing deformation, ensuring frac sleeves can be reopened even when significant casing deformation up-hole is present. This capability reduces the risk to the operator, particularly in areas with known seismic or pressure-related casing deformation issues.
Matt Chorney, Completions Manager, Teine Energy
Teine Energy has been working with the Interra Energy team since the launch of the Raptor OC technology. At Teine Energy, we rely exclusively on the Raptor OC system for our Annular Coil Frac Operations, and the technology consistently meets or exceeds our expectations. What sets it apart is the consistency and repeatability it provides in our operations. During a recent completion, Teine experienced some casing deformation near the heel of the well. After conducting a downhole camera and caliper run, we were able to successfully deploy a 2.30” OD slim shifting tool. This allowed us to navigate past the casing deformation and shift all but one of the intended sleeves into the open position, ensuring no production was lost throughout the lateral. The 37th sleeve was located within the deformed section of the wellbore and could not be shifted.

In recent years, the Raptor OC technology has been incorporated into other Interra offerings, further showcasing its adaptability. The Raptor™ Injection Sleeves have been introduced for water injection wells, optimizing fluid management, while Raptor™ Production Sleeves are now used in unconsolidated open hole production applications to control sand inflow, protect equipment, and maximize production. Additionally, the same technology has been used in steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) applications as a shifting steam outflow control device (OCD). These advancements show how Raptor technology is evolving to meet the industry’s diverse needs.
The continued success of the Raptor OC system highlights Interra Energy Services’ commitment to innovation and excellence in wellbore technology. By consistently delivering high performance and adapting to the ever-changing demands of the industry, the system has positioned itself as a key enabler of efficient, cost-effective completions. With ongoing advancements and the expansion of Raptor technology into new applications, Interra is well poised to support the future of energy production, offering solutions that address the complex challenges operators face today and in the years, to come.
