Premier Notley announces mandatory Alberta production curtailment

Alberta Premier Rachel Notley announced a mandatory oil production curtailment of 325,000 bbl/d or 8.7% of total provincial production, beginning January 1, 2019. The total production curtailment is approximately 75,000 bbl/d less than what many in the industry called for, and does not specify if there is a minimum production threshold per company for enacting the curtailment. The premier has also released an op-ed piece where she says the province must act now to deal with a growing glut of oil she blames on a lack of pipeline capacity. Notley says in the letter that there are two competing ideas for short-term relief — either let the market sort itself out, risking possible job losses and business closures, or intervene and temporarily restrict oil production. Canada Weekly Rig Count Down 5 to 199

Western Canada’s fleet of drilling rigs decreased to a total of 199 according to data collected by Baker Hughes for the week of November 30th. From last Friday, Alberta rig counts went down 2 to 136.
