Global Petroleum Show announces annualization

June 12, 20136:45 AM CNW

One of the world’s largest energy events to be held every year in Calgary, Canada

CALGARY, June 12, 2013 /CNW/ – dmg :: events, organizers of one of the world’s largest energy events, announced today that Global Petroleum Show (GPS), held in Calgary every two years since 1968, will now be held on an annual basis. The event broke records in 2012, welcoming 63,000 registered attendees from 100 countries, and 2,000 exhibiting companies in the oil and gas industry showcasing the latest technologies, products and services.

“This is an important evolution for the industry, for Canada and for Calgary,” said Wes Scott, Executive Vice President of dmg :: events (Canada) Inc., organizers of Global Petroleum Show. “Since 1968, Global Petroleum Show has been a major platform for international and local markets to conduct business face-to-face. The annualization of Global Petroleum Show offers more opportunities to connect the industry and explore the latest developments and innovations facing the global sector.”

According to a recent market research study conducted on GPS by an independent firm, SENTIS Market Research, GPS generates $69.4 million CAD in direct economic impact to Calgary and surrounding area as a result of hosting the three day event every two years. In addition, over $8.9 billion CAD in business transactions are conducted between local and international companies as a result of GPS.

“For the past forty-five years, Global Petroleum Show has helped bring the world to Alberta,” said Cal Dallas, Minister of International and Intergovernmental Relations. “I am so pleased that due to its overwhelming success the show has decided to become an annual event and I know it will cultivate even more strategic partnerships and business opportunities for Alberta companies.”

The annualization of GPS responds to attendee and exhibitor demand for annual access to emerging markets, the latest technologies, and collaboration with industry experts. Market research showed that 75 per cent of attendees polled would participate in GPS on an annual basis.

“The annualized Global Petroleum Show in Calgary demonstrates the city’s position as a global energy centre,” said Bruce Graham, President & CEO, Calgary Economic Development. “We have the people, experience and expertise and now an additional opportunity to showcase the innovation of our industry and opportunities for the world to be part of our energy.”

Show organizers expect the 2014 edition, which will take place June 10-12, to surpass attendance numbers from 2012, and be the largest GPS to date.

Key benefits of annualizing GPS include:

  • The ability to showcase rapidly advancing technology on an “as it happens” basis; consistently providing attendees with the latest developments on market research and technology.
  • The opportunity for increased market share and the chance for exhibitors to get in front of customers on a more regular basis.
  • Enhanced opportunity for attendees to do business with emerging markets such as Latin America and China, which move at a quick pace, and for which staying ahead of the demand for resources is imperative.

The annualization of GPS also marks the end of the Gas & Oil Expo, which is currently taking place this week at Calgary’s Stampede Park. The biennial exposition, which is held in the “off” year of GPS and also produced by dmg :: events, will be re-evaluated for future consideration in the Canadian market.
