MEDIA ADVISORY – Is Alberta's economic engine dead? New comprehensive report examines lessons from previous downturns and paints a pessimistic picture of Alberta's economy

November 18, 20159:16 AM CNW

CALGARY, Nov. 18, 2015 /CNW/ – Layoffs and cutbacks in the oilpatch and their ripple effects could stall the economic engine in Alberta for a long-time. Or maybe we'll see a price recovery next spring?  Who knows?

Is the past necessarily indicative of what is happening now? Can we predict the length and depth of the current oil price drop? Will a recovery be long and gradual, as it was after 1986, or that it will bounce back quickly, as it did after 2009?

On Thursday, November 19th, The School of Public Policy will release what is perhaps the most comprehensive report ever on whether there are lessons to be learned from previous oil routs, or whether this price drop is fundamentally different. The report also delivers a key message for companies, and governments of oil-producing provinces in Canada.

The bottom line – this price drop is different.

WHAT:

Press conference to release report on “A Comparative Anatomy of Oil Price Routs: A Review of Four Price Routs between 1985 and 2014”

Thursday, Nov. 19, 2015,  11:00 a.m. mountain
