Global LNG Fleet Market Company Coverage: GTT (Gaztransport & Technigaz), Hoegh LNG Holdings & Teekay LNG Partners

Today’s LNG industry is very different from that of the 1970s. By the end of 1979, after a surge of new building in the second half of the 1970s, the world fleet was 52 ships – 17 Moss, 16 Gaz Transport, 12 Technigaz, and 7 others. There were a limited number of trade routes, with ships working on long-term charter to deliver LNG from the exporting to importing countries.

The LNG shipping market has developed over the last decade, driven by growth in global liquefaction capacity and demand in the Pacific Basin. In recent years and is expected to increase imports greatly in the coming years; and the UK is no longer self-sufficient in natural gas from the North Sea and has become an importer of LNG. The USA was for a time an importer of LNG, but has become an exporter again after their development of large shale gas deposits. In recent years there has also been re-export of LNG from the USA and Belgium, and this has been developing into a spot market which is gradually taking an increasing share of world LNG trade. Among the exporting countries, the biggest development was Qatar gas’s decision to greatly expand its LNG exports, seeing opportunities to sell in Europe and the USA.

The global LNG market has led to a worldwide fleet of LNG carriers that transport LNG to regasification plants around the world. New trend of new-build ordering was witnessed in late 2012 and 2013. Rather than the LNG demand factors that drove orders in past years, LNG supply factors lead the current cycle, with new-build orders mainly tied to projects in Australia and the US.
