TIVERTON, ON, Dec. 11, 2015 /CNW/ – A week after announcing a long-term agreement to secure 6,300 megawatts of electricity through a multi-year investment program, Bruce Power was honoured with the Platts Global Energy Award for Industry Leadership in the power sector at an event in New York City.

“This really caps off a very successful year for our company when we've secured our long term future while reaching new heights in safety performance and output,” said Duncan Hawthorne, Bruce Power's President and CEO. “It's an honour to accept this on behalf of our 4,200 employees who work so hard every day to make Bruce Power an industry leader.”

Established in 1999 and often described as “the Oscars of the energy industry,” the Platts Global Energy Awards highlight corporate and individual innovation, leadership and superior performance in 17 categories that span the entire energy complex. Finalists were chosen for the Global Energy Awards from more than 200 nominations in over three dozen countries representing 4 continents, including some of the world's leading energy giants in both conventional and alternative energy.

Judges based their decision on the “successful development and implementation of a strategic plan that optimizes performance and growth while taking an aggressive, proactive approach toward a radically altered business and trading environment.”

Earlier this year, Brue Power received the highest marks in its 14 year history in the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission's annual safety grading of Canada's nuclear plants. In 2014 Bruce Power was awarded the Institute of Nuclear Power Operators (INPO) award of excellence in recognition of its world-class performance. The company has also been named one of Achievers Top 50 Most Engaged Workplaces and has been recognized for having one of Canada's Top 10 Corporate Cultures and being a Top 100 Employer for Young People for the past four years. Bruce Power has also received a Randstad Award as one of the country's most attractive employers and has been cited as one of the most noteworthy nuclear plants in the world by POWER Magazine.

About Bruce Power
Bruce Power operates the world's largest operating nuclear generating facility and is the source of roughly 30 per cent of Ontario's electricity. The company's site in Tiverton, Ontario is home to eight CANDU reactors, each one capable of generating enough low-cost, reliable, safe and clean electricity to meet the annual needs of a city the size of Hamilton. Formed in 2001, Bruce Power is an all-Canadian partnership among Borealis Infrastructure Management (a division of the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System), TransCanada, the Power Workers' Union and the Society of Energy Professionals. A majority of Bruce Power's employees are also owners in the business.
