AAPG 2016 Annual Convention and Exhibition Returns to Calgary

June 16, 20162:28 PM BOE Report Staff

Tulsa, OK, USA / June 14, 2016— The American Association of Petroleum Geologists’ (AAPG) flagship annual event, held this year in conjunction with the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists (CSPG), is returning to Calgary for the first time in 10 years.

The AAPG Annual Convention and Exhibition (ACE), which annually attracts thousands of geologists and geoscientists from around the world, will be held 19-22 June at Calgary’s popular Stampede Park.

Joining AAPG and CSPG for the meeting will be the Society for Sedimentary Geologists (SEPM) – a triumvirate that will ensure ACE’s tradition of delivering scientific excellence and professional camaraderie.

This year’s convention occurs in one of the most difficult times faced by the petroleum industry. Therefore, many of the business talks will focus on how to move forward against such adversity, maintain creativity and innovation in times of constraint and how to apply scientific advancements to improve technical and economic success. The lessons learned in these sessions will prove invaluable in the coming years as the industry learns how to do more with limited resources.

ACE also offers a public Career Center to help match job seekers with potential employers, which will provide a gathering place for conversation, networking and interviews and will feature a large bulletin board to post resumes and current job openings.

The ACE 2016 technical program features more than 850 technical and poster presentations in eight concurrent sessions. Technical sessions will address a broad spectrum of themes including:

  • Siliciclastics
  • Carbonates and Evaporates
  • Energy and the Environment
  • Geochemistry
  • Basin Modeling and Petroleum Systems
  • Structure, Tectonics and Geomechanics
  • Unconventional Resources
  • Oil Sands
  • Resources to Reserves
  • Geophysics
  • Redefining Reservoir — Core Values

ACE also includes an exhibition featuring the latest in industry technology and information.

The conference kicks off Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. with the exciting Imperial Barrel Award (IBA) Ceremony in which this year’s global competition winners will be announced. The new AAPG/AAPG Foundation IBA program is an annual competition in evaluating prospective basins, featuring teams of the top geoscience graduate students from around the world — all of whom have qualified for the finals by first winning IBA Region and Section competitions.

The traditional Opening Session and Awards Ceremony is at 4 p.m., during which the prestigious Sidney Powers Memorial Award and the Michel T. Halbouty Outstanding Leadership Award will be given to industry icons Dr. Paul Edwin Potter and Scott W. Tinker, respectively.  An icebreaker reception will follow, which will officially open the Exhibition Hall where colleagues from near and far can catch up and connect before the week’s technical program begins.

Other special events include:

All Convention Luncheon: The Business of Energy Transitions: How Companies Compete Through Disruptive Change — Featured speaker Peter Tertzakian, Chief Energy Economist and Managing Director, ARC Financial Corporation (Monday 12:00 p.m.)

Discovery Thinking Forum (AAPG/DPA) — Innovative Success in Canada and Colombia — Featured speakers include: Glen Nevekshonoff, Vice President of Development Seven Generations; Roy Stadlwieser, Stephane Labonte, Mike Hrudy and Chandler Wilhelm, Shell; John Hogg, President of Skybattle Resources Ltd. and Brian Russel Frost, Distinguished Geophysical Advisor, Anadarko Petroleum Corporation (Monday 1:45 p.m.)

Michel T. Halbouty Lecture: Bay du Nord: A Bold Chase for Oil in a Harsh Frontier Basin — Featured speaker Tim Dodson, Executive Vice President, Statoil ASA (Monday 5:40 p.m.)

About AAPG
Founded in 1917, the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) is the premiere global organization for petroleum explorationists with over 40,000 members in 125 countries. The original purpose of AAPG – to foster scientific research, to advance the science of geology, to promote technology, and to inspire high professional conduct – still guides the Association today. AAPG provides publications, conferences, and educational opportunities to geoscientists and disseminates the most current geological information available to the general public.
