Frac Water Trends in Alberta – Connate Water Solutions Inc.

March 3, 20174:36 AM BOE Report Staff

If anything can be learned from the last two years in Alberta, it is that both operators and service companies are fiercely looking at every area of their cost structure.  Our core business at Connate Water Solutions Inc. is water. Every day we are implementing new water technologies to reduce costs and better serve our clients by staying at the forefront of industry water demands.

Recently, we have examined average water usage on a per well basis in Alberta from 2013 to 2016 (2016 average = ~7,900 m3).  As expected, the increased water usage from 2013 to 2016 also corresponds with increased proppant loading (per tonne) on a per well basis.  This undeniable trend of increased water usage continued into 2016 which was a historic year of low industry activity (as seen by the well count).

On the top-end of the water usage spectrum, operators in unconventional resource plays like the Montney/Duvernay can require large slickwater or hybrid-slickwater volumes as high as 60,000 m3 per well.  Historically, these operators have mostly relied upon large surface water bodies (lakes/river) and annual run-off to satisfy their completion requirements.  Connate Water Solutions Inc. is helping operators in areas such as the Deep Basin to diversify and de-risk their frac water supply through non-saline and saline groundwater wells directly on-lease.

What is the status of your corporate water management strategy?  Find out more at connatewater.ca.

Connate Water Solutions Inc. is committed to providing low-cost, innovative hydrogeological services.  Let us review the groundwater potential in your area and identify ways to lower your water sourcing and transportation costs.
