Initial production data is out for August in Alberta. BC and Saskatchewan have yet to report. Alberta has reported oil, condensate, and gas; full Alberta NGL data (including pentane) and marketable gas is due out in a couple weeks. While the August data won’t be considered complete until the rest of the Alberta data has been reported, it is nonetheless worthwhile to show the data as it stands today. Pentane volumes in Alberta will not be represented yet for August which will affect liquids results, and “gas equivalent” volumes will be used instead of “marketable gas” in cases where marketable gas is not yet available. As always, we use calendar day production metrics so these are real volumes produced in the month. Despite the incomplete version of this data, it is still interesting to present it as this data is fresh.
BOE Intel subscribers can generate these reports for themselves whenever they want, and interact with the wells on the BOE Intel activity map. Subscribers are able to generate top well reports with more wells, on an overall basis, by formation, by company, by area, or by well type.
TOP 15 OIL/CONDENSATE WELLS – August volumes – Alberta only (see on map)
Notable oil/condensate wells:
- In a remarkable display, ARC Resources had 11 of the top 15 oil/condensate wells in Alberta for the month of August. These wells all come from the condensate rich Karr/Kakwa area originally acquired through the company’s merger with Seven Generations. These wells had condensate rates ranging from 1,134 – 1,650 bbl/d, plus associated gas.
- One of the most active Montney operators in Canada, ARC has brought 110 Montney wells on production this year, 51 of those in Alberta. The most recent well brought on production to make this top well list was June 7th, 2024. Considering ARC has brought another 20 Alberta Montney wells on production since that date, it’s possible that ARC may have a strong showing on these monthly reports for several months to come. See the location of all Alberta wells brought on production by ARC in 2024 in Figure 2 below.
- Whitecap Resources had 3 of the top 15 wells from its Montney development at Kakwa. These 3 wells had condensate production rates of 1,203 – 1,238 bbl/d in the month, and all have been strong producers since being placed on production in March (see cumulative numbers below).
- Veren had 1 well in the top 15 this month, with a Montney well from Elmworth that produced 1,143 bbl/d of oil in August. This well has cumulatively produced 258,866 bbls of oil since being placed on production about 7 months ago. Veren has headlined many Top Well Reports in recent months, as its Montney acquisitions over the last couple of years have provided the company with a significant inventory of prolific Montney wells for future development.
TOP 15 OIL/CONDENSATE WELLS – August volumes – Alberta only – initial liquids data (pentane volumes not yet reported for August)
*partial August data only, AB pentane volumes not yet reported. “Gas equivalent” volumes represented in gas column until “marketable gas” is reported. Cumulative column includes oil/condensate/pentane.
**TOP WELL REPORTS generally filter out oil sands/thermal wells, and only consider onshore Canadian production. However, BOE Intel subscribers can choose their own well types and include or exclude these wells.
