The Edge Malaysia has reported Petronas as saying that LNG Canada’s first liquified natural gas shipment is expected to be in July 2025. The article cites delays around cold weather, but this timeline fits broadly within the most recent expectations for a mid-2025 startup.
Startup can’t come soon enough for Canadian natural gas producers who have seen extraordinarily wide AECO basis over the last number of months. Natural gas production in Canada has been on the increase as producers ramp up volumes in anticipation of LNG Canada’s startup. Volumes have also been rising in the form of associated gas as a result of liquids-rich drilling into plays like the Montney.
Industry wide Montney production in Canada approached 2.4 million BOE/d in December, with ~75% of those BOEs being natural gas. Roughly 10.5 BCF/d of natural gas production comes from the Montney formation, more than half of Canada’s total.
