Driver Training School Now Open to All Oilfield Professionals

June 19, 20255:57 AM BOE Report Staff

A major step in professional driver development for Canada’s energy sector is underway. SLB Canada (formerly Schlumberger), long recognized for its safety culture and high operational standards, has officially opened the doors of its professional Driver Training School to the entire oilfield community, not just SLB employees.

Previously reserved for only SLB personnel, this program is now open to all oilfield service companies, exploration & production companies, and logistics providers. With the Driver Training school strategically located in Calgary, Alberta, it is easy for get to for all drivers. Offering access to some of the most advanced and safety-focused driver training courses available in the energy sector.

The driver training course is designed to enhance road safety, minimize accidents, and improve fleet performance across the oilfield workforce. Backed by over 50 years of combined industry experience, the program covers a full range of vehicle classes—from Ford F-150s and F-550s to Class 1 and 3 heavy-haul units—preparing drivers for the demanding conditions of Canada’s oilfield terrain.

We offer customized driver training tailored to the specific needs of our customers. The program includes:

  • Class 1 Learning Pathway – a government mandated program that ensures new commercial drivers meet standardized safety benchmarks.
  • Classes 3 & 5 in-vehicle and classroom training
  • Emergency Response & Convoy Simulation – Real-time crisis training
  • Winter Driving Mastery – Navigate snow, ice, and low visibility
  • Fatigue Management – Stay alert, stay safe

All courses are built on SLB’s DriveSMARRT® safety methodology, which emphasizes safe, conscious driving practices designed to reduce human error. The training covers critical techniques including winter driving, fatigue management, ABS and emergency braking, tire chain usage, pre- and post-trip inspections, cargo securement, skid control, and emergency response procedures. Drivers will also apply defensive driving principles in an SLB vehicle, receiving hands-on instruction in 4×4 operation and commentary driving on both paved and rural roads.

Why does it matter?

As driving continues to pose serious safety risks across the oilfield sector, access to high-quality and consistent driver training is more important than ever.

SLB’s training program is designed to focus on real-world conditions, defense techniques, and proactive hazard awareness. It helps companies:

  • Equip drivers with tools to make better decisions under pressure
  • Support their internal safety culture
  • Support workforce confidence and professionalism
