Surface Solutions Inc.(SSi) adds VentMEDIC dMRV systems to its Western Canada fleet, opening state-of-the-art methane measurement to any operator.

August 25, 20265:55 AM Sponsored Content

For decades, the standard way to check methane emissions at a wellhead in Western Canada has been the same: a technician on-site with a bubble kit or a handheld gas detector, flagging whether gas is escaping. Simple, cheap, and as regulators, investors, and carbon-market participants have increasingly pointed out, nowhere near good enough for what the industry needs to prove today.

The gap is accuracy and quantification. Bubble tests can tell you methane is present. They can’t tell you how much. They aren’t NIST-traceable. They can’t be audited to the standard that carbon credits or serious ESG reporting requires. Every operator in the basin knows this. Very few have had a cost-effective way to fix it.

That’s what Surface Solutions is bringing to the market.

A New Service in Surface Solutions’ Fleet

Surface Solutions Inc. is now offering VentMEDIC dMRV systems across its Western Canada operations. Two units are live in the SSI fleet today, dispatched from our Alberta and BC bases and available on the same crew visits that already cover the rest of the regulated testing scope on a producer’s wells.

For an operator, this means two things:

  • Access to the newest generation of methane emissions measurement technology in your abandonment and emission management programs.
  • The ability to add dMRV coverage onto an already-scheduled Surface Solutions program SCVT, SUSP inspections, integrity work, whatever’s already on the plan, and walk out with regulator-grade, audit-grade emissions data in the same field cycle.

What VentMEDIC Actually Is

VentMEDIC is a digital Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (dMRV) platform designed specifically for the accuracy and accountability challenges that legacy emissions testing methods can’t meet. The device measures methane concentration from 0 to 100 percent volume, gas flow from 0.0002 to 250 SLPM, and mass flow from under one gram per hour up to 9.43 kilograms per hour, across an operating range of -40°C to 60°C and up to 1,500 PSI. It’s rated Class 1 Division II for hazardous locations. The longest single continuous surface casing vent monitoring run on record with the platform is over 2,500 hours.

More important than the sensor spec is the data layer. Every measurement is NIST-traceable and secured through blockchain integration. The unit is autonomous; no technician has to be on-site to keep it running, and it is remotely operable via the VentMEDIC app on a laptop, tablet, or phone. Operators can adjust configuration, view live data, and open or close vents remotely from anywhere with cellular or Bluetooth reach.

High Accuracy Digital Bubble Testers

Historically, surface casing vent flow present can be manipulated by a multitude of external factors like weather, time of year, time of day, and testing procedure. Even particular people conducting Bubble Tests are rendering different pass or fail results to the next person. Surface Solutions Inc. sells, rents, and services Digital Bubble Testers to eliminate perplexity.

Surface Solutions Inc. Digital Bubble Tester deploys high accuracy handheld, anticorrosive mass flow meter with Bluetooth and app capability. It allows users to record and chart ten-minute bubble tests and extract quantified flow rate and flow volumes into an excel file.

For an industry that’s been told for years it needs to move past bubble tests but hasn’t been given a workable ramp, that’s a meaningful shift.

Where It Fits In The Compliance Stack

VentMEDIC systems slot cleanly into the emissions leg of any existing regulatory program. On a scheduled SCVT, VentMEDIC can quantify what a legacy pressure-and-flow measurement would only characterize. On a fugitive emissions survey, it turns detection into measurement. On an integrity file where a well has known SCV flow, it delivers continuous quantified data instead of point-in-time snapshots, which is what the next generation of AER and BCER reporting frameworks are going to expect.

Operators who move now will have quantified baseline data on their wellstock before regulators tighten the requirement. Those who wait will end up doing it anyway, just under more pressure.

Bottom Line

The technology to measure methane properly has existed for years. What’s been missing in Western Canada is a way for the average operator to actually use it without a capital line item. Surface Solutions’ VentMEDIC rental program fills that gap.

If you’re planning your next round of emissions or integrity work, ask about adding a VentMEDIC unit to the scope. The delta between “we tested it” and “we measured and can prove it” is where the value lives.
