SECURE significantly reduced operational costs for a Canadian heavy oil producer requiring continuous chemical treatment to control hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) at their single-well oil batteries. Reaching H₂S levels approaching 800 ppmv, the producer required a program to not only replace the incumbent chemistry but also improve treatment performance and reduce scavenger volume.
SECURE conducted a 16-week field trial of HS-8910, a water soluble, non-triazine H₂S scavenger solution. The trial demonstrated that effective H₂S control could be achieved without increased chemical consumption or changes to the existing injection infrastructure.
By maintaining the original casing and flow line injection points, the trial provided a clear comparison with the current incumbent program, showcasing that chemistry selection and controlled rate optimization were the primary changes required to improve treatment performance. With these observations, the operating team evaluated H₂S concentrations at each stage of the optimization process to ensure effective H₂S control was maintained throughout the transition.
The trial produced measurable improvements in H₂S control, chemical consumption and treatment costs, resulting in an estimated annualized savings of CAD $150,000 and a 37% reduction in total scavenger volume, demonstrating HS-8910 could provide more consistent results while decreasing additional costs.
