“The Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) congratulates LNG Canada and its partners on reaching a final investment decision for Phase 2, marking another historic milestone for Canada’s growing LNG export industry.
Amid intensifying global competition, this decision sends a powerful signal Canada is a destination for world-scale investment and our country is ready to build major projects that will strengthen our economy, diversify our trading relationships, and enhance our role as a reliable global energy supplier. At a time when countries are seeking secure energy supplies, LNG Canada Phase 2 will further cement Canada’s reputation as a stable and trusted energy partner.
The Phase 2 expansion will add two additional LNG processing units within LNG Canada’s existing Kitimat facility, increasing total production capacity from 14 to 28 mtpa. The expansion will create thousands of jobs, generate more than $50 billion in government revenues, strengthen Indigenous partnerships, and support economic growth across the country. It also advances Canada’s ambition to become a leading global LNG exporter, connecting our abundant, responsibly produced, natural gas resources to growing global markets.
Global LNG demand is expected to grow for decades, driven by economic development, energy security priorities, industrial growth, and the rapid expansion of energy-intensive technologies, such as artificial intelligence and data centres. Canada’s energy sector is uniquely positioned to help meet that demand.
As Canada’s LNG export capacity grows, so do the benefits to Canadians. Recent economic modelling shows that expanding Canadian LNG export capacity to 56 Mtpa would add more than $11 billion annually to national GDP, support nearly 100,000 high-paying jobs throughout the supply chain and generate over $90 billion in government revenues.
LNG Canada Phase 2 is more than an investment in infrastructure. It is an investment in Canada’s long-term prosperity, competitiveness, and energy future, demonstrating what is possible when governments, Indigenous communities, industry, and investors work together to advance projects of national significance. This is a major win for our country’s long-term economic future.”
