Only a party terribly versed in Alberta's chief industry would propose such a damaging tax increase that would primarily affect its province's main sector. However, Alberta's NDP did just that, by proposing a 38% corporate tax increase--an increase which uniquely, and adversely, affects the province’s oil and gas industry, the main industry which drives this economy. Over the past 8 years, as investment to Alberta's oil and gas sector has largely dried up, primarily as a result of the NDP [Read more]
We should not be offering tours of oil and gas sites to radical activists
Did you hear the news? Celebrity teen activist Greta Thunberg is coming to Alberta! Immediately, many emotional politicians have begun laying out the red carpet and asking her for meetings and offering tours of our wonderful Cities and oil & gas facilities. What an absolutely embarrassing display by our elected 'leaders'. Fortunately, Alberta's provincial government has said it will not be seeking a meeting with Greta Thunberg. Thank goodness we have one level of Government with sense. [Read more]
Alberta’s oil and gas industry has suffered deeply under the NDP
After protesting against the oil industry for 10, 20, 30, and even 40 years, Alberta's NDP took the helm of the province in 2015 after a remarkable sum of events leading up to that fateful day. Since day one of their governorship, Alberta's oil and gas industry has suffered deeply--it will likely go down as the worst 4 years in the sector's history. Capital fled and did not return The day after the 2015 election, massive amounts of capital began fleeing the province. During a 2 day period when [Read more]
Replacing the NEB with the Canadian Energy Regulator is simply another assault on Alberta’s oil industry
At this point, it has been made perfectly clear that the federal government of Canada, led by Prime Minister Trudeau and his puppetmaster, Gerald Butts, are determined to grind western Canada's oil and gas industry to a halt. The list of liberal-strikes on this industry is extensive, and the reality is clear: they have turned away investment, and hundreds of thousands of people are unemployed at their hands. Yesterday, one of the few good Senators in Ottawa, Doug Black from Alberta, offered [Read more]
4 years after vetoing Keystone XL, Barack Obama’s upcoming Calgary visit rubs salt in the wound
Yesterday it was announced former United States President Barack Obama will be speaking at the Saddledome in Calgary in less than 2 months. His March 5th speech comes almost exactly 4 years after vetoing TransCanada's Keystone XL pipeline project. His upcoming arrival serves as a difficult reminder of the severe damage President Obama inflicted on Alberta's oil and gas industry. 4 years after his veto of Keystone XL, and his tarnishing Alberta oil's reputation, we have seen just how much [Read more]
Open Letter to Premier Rachel Notley
Dear Premier Notley, I publish the BOE Report and founded this oil and gas daily in 2012. Through the years we have had a front row seat to the many failures of our governments to act on getting this province market access solutions. Major projects have been killed or put on indefinite hiatus, and government interventions to try to salvage these projects has become the norm. But none of this matters right now. We currently have no takeaway capacity and the industry is in free-fall. As you [Read more]
Politics is killing Energy East. Period.
A pathetically poor attempt to deflect blame from useless Canadian politicians and agencies has arisen from the typical NDP/Liberal defenders. They are (unbelievably) claiming that it is not politics, but economics which might kill Energy East. What a joke. The project was first announced August 2013, and after 15 months of consultation, the application was filed with the NEB October 2014. 3 year later and still no approval. Just delay after delay. Meanwhile, 300,000 barrels of Saudi oil [Read more]
We need to care more about how our government spends
A story broke that United Conservative Party MLA Derek Fildebrandt rented out his taxpayer-subsidized apartment on AirBNB. Most people saw this as a wrong-doing by Fildebrandt, as they should. Fildebrandt made $2,555 from AirBnb, which he donated to Alberta's debt after the income became controversy. Fildebrandt is especially hypocritical, since he used to look for very similar spending/double-dipping habits while at the Canadian Taxpayers Federation. This is not a new story though, as [Read more]
Alberta government deficit reduction relies solely on oil price increase
Alberta-governing NDP's pledge to get the province off the proverbial 'royalty roller-coaster' is simply an empty promise. In conjunction with tabling their second straight $10+ billion deficit, Alberta's NDP forecasts to reduce future deficits from $10.3 billion this year to just over $7 billion by 2019/20. One would assume this would be based on solid fiscal management: preferably curtailing spending or at least keeping growth in line with population or even inflation. But upon closer [Read more]
Barack Obama has been a disaster for Alberta’s oil industry
After eight long years, President Obama's reign is nearing its end. He is widely viewed as a popular figure across Canada--mainly eastern Canada where he is viewed positively by nearly 80% of the population. If eastern Canadians had more pride in their national oil and gas resources, they would not see President Obama in the same glowing light. He has been one of the biggest challenges to face Canada's oil industry, and his departure from the White House--especially given his successor--is a big [Read more]
