A look at the valuation of oil sands asset deals

Last week's massive acquisition of Shell's oil sands assets by Canadian Natural Resources Limited was purchased at comparable metrics to other oil sands deals according to the BOE Report M&A database. CNRL paid Shell $11 billion for approximately 188,000 Bbl/d production for deal metrics of $59,000/BOE/d. Canada Weekly Rig Count Down 20 to 315

Western Canada's fleet of drilling rigs are still busy with 315 actively drilling according to data collected by Baker Hughes for the week of March 10th. Drilling activity is starting to slow down, but still very active in comparison to last year's count (only 98 active rigs). Drilling activity near Lloydminster still slow despite big uptick from one year ago

The Lloydminster area of western Canada has been hit particularly hard by the downturn. Activity levels have fallen off a cliff since 2014. For the first 2 months of 2017, 82 wells have been drilled within a 50 mile radius of the city of Lloydminster according to data from the BOE Report Well Activity Map. Tourmaline and Peyto are Alberta’s top gas drillers so far this year

In January and February 2017, the BOE Report well map counts 268 gas wells spudded. The two most active companies were Tourmaline Oil Corp and Peyto Exploration and Development - each spudding 31 wells. The deep basin operators were also the only two companies to drill over 100,000 metres (Tourmaline drilled 148,297 and Peyto 131,037).
