WASHINGTON - Court documents filed by the federal government say planning is well underway for bilateral talks in the dispute over the Line 5 cross-border pipeline. A proposed motion filed last week in U.S. District Court in Michigan says the first formal negotiating session between the two countries will happen "shortly." Canada decided last month to invoke a 1977 pipelines treaty between the two countries after talks broke down between the state of Michigan and the pipeline's operator, [Read more]
Alberta isn’t alone in facing climate challenge, says province’s COP26 representative
Alberta's top representative to the global climate conference taking place in Scotland says the province is not alone in facing the challenges of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions. Steve MacDonald, who heads a provincial agency that funds carbon-reducing technology, is one of Alberta's two official representatives at the global conference. He says that while Albertans can often feel singled out by measures to fight climate change, the COP26 conference has shown him that countries [Read more]

Alberta government unveils road map with goal of becoming hydrogen export superpower
EDMONTON - The Alberta government has released its road map to reach a goal of becoming a world leader in hydrogen exports by the end of the decade. Premier Jason Kenney says Alberta is well-positioned with its existing energy infrastructure to become a global supplier of choice for hydrogen and he calls it a “game-changer” in the climate change fight, given that hydrogen emits no greenhouse gases when burned. He says the global hydrogen market is expected to become worth up to $2.5 trillion [Read more]
Industry group says climate pledges risk making Canada an ‘outlier’ with competitors
The head of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers says Canada's climate pledges risk making the country an "outlier" with its economic competitors. Tim McMillan says that as Canada increases its environmental ambition at events such as this week's climate conference in Scotland, the federal government must work harder to bring the rest of the world along. He says Canada risks losing investment to other jurisdictions if it moves too far on its own. McMillan says the government [Read more]
Alberta, with largest oil industry, sends fewer to COP than any other energy province
EDMONTON - The province with Canada's largest oil and gas industry has sent one of the country's smallest delegations to the international climate conference, where emissions from that industry are under scrutiny. A preliminary list of the Canadian delegation to COP26 in Glasgow, Scotland, shows Alberta has sent two bureaucrats. Newfoundland has nine people at the meetings, Manitoba has six and Ontario has four, as does the Northwest Territories. Quebec has 36 [Read more]
Alberta government, opposition say the province should be consulted on emissions caps
EDMONTON - Alberta politicians are warning the federal Liberal government that caps on greenhouse gas emissions from oil and gas will have to be set in consultation with the province. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has told the global climate conference taking place in Glasgow, Scotland, that Canada would impose a hard cap on emissions from the [Read more]
Oilpatch leaders fear “reckless” move as Trudeau commits to emissions cap on sector
CALGARY - The chief executive of a Calgary-based energy company says a federally imposed cap on emissions from the oil and gas sector is reckless and dangerous. At the UN climate conference in Scotland on Monday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau formally committed to imposing emissions caps on Canada's oil and gas industry. The government's new net-zero advisory body will be tasked with helping craft targets for the oil and gas cap. But Grant Fagerheim, CEO of Whitecap Resources Inc., says [Read more]
As UN climate conference begins, Alberta has much on the line
CALGARY - As world leaders descend on Glasgow this week for the start of the 2021 UN Climate Conference, Alberta — the Canadian jurisdiction with perhaps the most on the line — will be watching. COP26, as it is known, will be the most significant global climate change summit since Paris in 2015. At that time, Canada committed to reducing the country’s greenhouse gas emissions by 30 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030, with the aim of keeping global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius. That [Read more]
