“True power is sitting back and observing things with logic…” – words of wisdom to navigate today’s dumpster fires

February 4, 20266:34 AM Terry Etam0 Comments

Everyone wants to talk about the big flamethrowers of the day. Will we build pipelines? What will happen with tariffs? Where can big tech plug in their data centers, preferably by noon tomorrow? It’s totally understandable that people are curious about these things; the impact of any could be very significant. There are endless forums in which to debate odds of success for any of these, or estimate timelines. I can’t even guess at them so am not going to try, and instead maybe distract y’all [Read more]

Equinor sold about 30% of its US gas on spot market during January price spike

February 4, 20265:33 AM Reuters0 Comments

Natural gas specialized flow meters on brick wall.

Norway's Equinor sold around 30% of volumes from its U.S. onshore natural gas assets on a spot basis in January, capitalising on a cold snap that sharply lifted demand and prices, its chief financial officer said on Wednesday. An Arctic blast sent U.S. heating demand soaring in January and froze oil and gas wells, cutting gas output to a two-year low and pushing some northeast gas hub prices to record highs. Equinor owns stakes in onshore gas production in the U.S., with the Marcellus [Read more]

Venezuelan expats who helped propel Canada oil sands growth see return home as unlikely

February 4, 20264:00 AM Reuters0 Comments

Professional engineer Luis Cabana couldn't take a walk in downtown Calgary in the mid-2000s without someone he knew calling out to him in Spanish. Office towers in the corporate heart of Canada's oil and gas sector were at the time heavily populated with Venezuelan expats who had fled persecution and economic stagnation in their home country. Wintry and vast, Canada is geographically far from the heat and humidity of Venezuela. But the oil sands of northern Alberta and Venezuela's Orinoco [Read more]

Trump’s India pact to make big dent in Russian oil revenue

February 4, 20262:57 AM Reuters0 Comments

Russia faces a steep drop in oil income if U.S. President Donald Trump successfully pressures India to stop importing Russian crude, because losing its top purchaser of seaborne exports would force Moscow to slash prices to find other buyers, analysts and traders said. Trump on Monday cut U.S. tariffs on Indian goods in a trade deal he said also included provisions for India to halt oil imports from Russia, the world's second-biggest oil exporter. The United States is putting pressure on [Read more]

What’s the point of Europe today? It must figure it out fast: Stephen Jen

February 4, 202612:00 AM Reuters0 Comments

We all know people who seem to attract all the bad luck in life. Europe, facing both internal and external challenges, is starting to look like that unfortunate person. What the region needs now is clarity of purpose and a bold plan to achieve it. Some of the challenges Europe faces come from without, such as fraying Transatlantic ties with the U.S. and competitive pressures from China. Other difficulties stem from its own past policies and priorities – most notably over-regulation and an [Read more]

Oil extends climb on fears of escalating Middle East tensions

February 3, 20269:05 PM Reuters0 Comments

Oil prices extended gains on Wednesday after the U.S. shot down an Iranian drone and armed Iranian boats approached a U.S.-flagged vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, rekindling fears of an escalation in tensions between Washington and Tehran. Brent crude futures were up 56 cents, or 0.8%, at $67.89 per barrel at 0400 GMT. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude was up 63 cents, or 1.0%, at $63.84 per barrel. Both benchmarks rose nearly 2% on Tuesday, as investors monitored developments between the [Read more]
